Deputy Indian High Commissioner discusses PC system, 13th amendment with Pilleyan, Karuna Amman

ECONOMYNEXT – India’s Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Vinod K Jacob held separate meetings with delegations led by government MPs S Chandrakanthan (alias Pilleyan) and V Muralitharan (alias Karuna Amman) yesterday.
The High Commission tweeted last night that the discussions had focused on development cooperation in the east and full implementation of the 13th amendment to the constitution. Provincial councils were also discussed, it said.
During his official visit to Colombo in early January, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met a delegation of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs with whom he discussed, among other things, the role played by provincial councils in national reconciliation.
The Indian-initiated discussions with Sri Lana’s Tamil political leaders take place against a backdrop of remarks made by a section of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) calling for the abolition of the provincial council system which was established in 1987 as a result of the Indo-Lanka accord.
