Election Commission meeting health officials today to decide on elections

ECONOMYNEXT – Members of the Elections Commission are set to meet health officials today to discuss the effect COVID-19 will have on the Parliamentary General Election .

In a Media statement, the Chief Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that a final decision will be taken regarding the actions to be taken on the matter on the advise of these health officials.

The Election Commission also announced that neither deposits nor nominations for the Parliamentary Election will be received today as it is declared a public holiday by the Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs.

Deposits and nominations will be received during office hours on March 17 and 18 and from 8.30 a.m. up to 12.00 noon of March 19, stated the statement.

The Election Commission will issue the Notice of Poll under Section 24 (1) of the Parliament Elections Act, No. 01 of 1981 on March 19 upon the finalization of matters pertaining to the nominations and objections.

It is also announced that all Returning Officers and the Deputy/Assistant Commissioners of Elections have been instructed to accept applications for postal voting until midnight of March 17.(Colombo/Mar16/2020)
