Ella Rock fire: fight still on to douse it
The fire that engulfed the forest reserve of the Ella Rock last evening has yet to be doused, as the lower part of the region continues to burn.
Ella police told RepublicNext that local firefighters, along with the Army and Ella residents are still fighting to put the fire out.
Deputy Director (Early Warnings) of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) speaking to RepublicNext said that dousing the fire is difficult as it is on a mountain top and weather conditions have made it difficult to reach it.
In response to a request made by the DMC, the Air Force has attempted to deploy a helicopter from the Rathmalana Airport but is currently unable to reach the rock due to bad weather.
“Once the weather is cleared they will get there,” Air force Spokesman Group Captain M. D. A. G. Senevirathne told RepublicNext.
Police said the fire had destroyed approximately 20 acres of forest cover in the Ella rock region so far.
Ella Police is still investigating the cause of the fire.
