Elpitiya polling underway results expected around 10 pm
Polling in the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha elections commenced at 7 am this morning (11) and the results are expected around 10 pm.
A total of 53,384 people are eligible to vote and 47 polling centres have been established for voting.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is calling this Local Government poll a litmus test for Democratic National Alliance candidate Sajith Premadasa who represents the area in Parliament.
Galle district Assistant Commissioner of Elections K.U. Chandralal said that the process of counting votes will be carried out in election centres established in 17 electoral divisions.
“The counting of votes is expected to end at 7 pm and the final result of the election will be announced before 10 pm,” Chandralal said.
Security has also been tightened in all voting centres.
At least five elections officers have been allocated for every voting centre and four police officers have also been deployed for each voting centre, according to Chandralal.
Meanwhile addressing the media, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said that actions such as requesting someone else’s votes and forcing someone not to vote would be considered illegal within an area of 400 metres from the voting centres.
The elections to the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha was delayed by an objection raised by a party which did not have its nomination papers accepted last year when Local Government polls were held around the country.
The aggrieved party filed action and the Supreme Court (SC) ordered issued an interim order preventing the election.
The Apex court ordered the election to be held after it found that the disqualification of that party was legal.
