Emergency lifted with proviso to deploy forces
The government has allowed the Emergency Regulations to lapse five months after they were imposed in the wake of the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks and three months after racist mob violence hit several urban areas.
The Army spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu told RepublicNext that the Emergency will not be re-imposed by President Maithripala Sirisena.
However, he said that the President has reserved the right to deploy the Armed forces in assistance to the police. The police department may under Sector 12 of the Public Security Ordinance ask for assistance for public safety, Atapattu added.
