ECONOMYNEXT- Former MP Eran Wickramaratne is saying that the government has started suppressing criticism about the shortcomings in the fight against COVID-19.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the former state minister said that some journalists and social media activists have been arrested for criticising and expressing their opinion speaking about the government.
“By imprisoning the journalists they are trying to create fear among the other journalists as well,” he added.
Also, he said the opposition will give its fullest support to the government to suppress the Coronavirus but not to suppress the media.
And said “we silently waited for the past four weeks watching all this but will not stay silent any longer,”
Wickramaratne said free democracy is not only about the right to vote it is also about the right to speak and the freedom of expression.
“Why is the government scared of criticism? How much were Maithri and Ranil criticised? That’s called democracy,” he said.
Further, he said that there are shortcomings in government employees and we get to know about their shortcoming through media and social media.
“But we like to ask who is actually putting the government employees in an uncomfortable position?”
He said over 14,000 Grama Niladaris all around the country said that they cannot perform their duties properly as people come and ask them about the promised relief to them by the government which are yet to be given. (Colombo/Apr17/2020)
