Eran says if MCC money was given to government Auditor General can easily trace it
ECONOMYNEXT- Samagi Jana Balavegaya National List candidate Eran Wickramaratne is saying that if any part of the MCC grant money was given to the previous government then the Auditor General can easily trace the transaction.
The Former State Minister said that the US embassy in Colombo issued a statement saying that no MCC grant monies were ever transferred to or spent by the Government under the current $480 million grant.
He said apart from that if they had given out any money then it should have being received at the Finance Ministry,
“If the money was received by the Finance Ministry then it is easy to trace as the Auditor General can find it,” he added.
Further, he said that according to his knowledge no money was ever received from the MCC grant and added that accusations of money being given to the former government under the MCC grant are being made to mislead the people.
Also, he said that the MCC grant has a history that dates back to 2002 and that the agreement pertaining to the grant was never signed by the former government although it received cabinet approval.
“MCC agreement is different from the other types of the agreements as to enforce the grant it requires the approval of Parliament of the respective country apart from the cabinet approval,” he added.
Wickramaratne said that there was nothing to hide in the MCC grant and it could have been openly debated in Parliament. (Colombo/June29/2020)
