Expert committee to decide who in Sri Lanka should receive Sinopharm jab
ECONOMYNEXT – An expert committee will recommend what age groups in Sri Lanka ought to receive the Sinopharm vaccine, Chief Epidemiologist Dr Sudath Samaraweera said.
Once all Chinese nationals employed in Sri Lanka have received the jab, the health ministry will take a call on who in Sri Lanka should get it, based on the experts’ recommendation, he said.
As per research so far, Samaraweera said, people under the age of 18, pregnant women and those witch chronic illnesses will not receive the Chinese-manufactured vaccine.
“This vaccine, too, must be taken in two doses. The second dose must be given three to four weeks after the first,” he said.
The expert committee will review all data before making its recommendation, the chief epidemiologist said. He insisted that, contrary to fears expressed by some, these vaccines are not used in countries like Sri Lanka to test their efficacy.
“It is not like that at all. Only once final trials have been completed and all scientific data have been reviewed that decisions are taken,” he said.
Research is also under way to determine the effectiveness of administering one type of vaccine as the first jab and a different type as the second. (Colombo/Apr01/2021)
