ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has issued flood warnings for low lying areas around three rivers in the Southern part of the island, as heavy rains continued to lash the island, leaving at least one person dead from a flash flood.
Sri Lanka’s disaster management office said, in the Nilwala River water had reached 6.96 metres or major flood level, around Panadugama by 3.00 am and was still rising.
Waters had topped 6.5 metres in the Kalu Ganga (river), around Millankanda area and was still rising.
In the Gin Ganga (river), water level was over 4.4 metres at minor flood level and still rising.
By the late Monday at least one person had died and over 150 houses damaged by floods in the Galle and Matara districts, and 1,500 families were hit.
Sri Lanka’s Met Office is forecasting more rain of up to 200 millimetres for Tuesday in the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces.
In the North-Western, Northern, Uva and Eastern provinces 100 millimetre rains are forecasted. (Colombo/Sept24/2019)
