Former COPE chair Sunil Handunneththi loses seat in Matara
ECONOMYNEXT – Former COPE chair and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Sunil Handunneththi lost his parliamentary seat, election results for the Matara district revealed today.
Handuneththi contested from the JVP-led National People’s Power (NPP), which came in at third place in the Matara electoral district winning 37,136 votes but failing to secure a seat. The Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) came in second with 72,740 votes, securing one seat, while the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) won the district with a mammoth 352,217 votes winning them six seats in the legislature.
Early analysis of the district’s results shows that the former JVP parliamentarian lost by a margin of just over 1,200 votes. Posts and comments expressing dismay at his defeat were observed on social media. Handuneththi rose to prominence in Sri Lanka’s eighth parliament as the chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises, whose investigations included a highly publicised probe of the controversial bond scam.
