ECONOMYNEXT – Former Sri Lanka MP Duminda Silva who was serving a death sentence over murder charges has been released from prison on a “special presidential pardon”, Media Spokesman for the Department Chandana Ekanayake confirmed to EconomyNext on June 24.
Silva was released June 24 morning in addition to 93 prisoners including 16 ex-Tamil Tiger combatants who were also pardoned by the president.
However, the prison spokesman previously claimed that Silva was not among the 93 prisoners who had received the pardon. But the news that Silva has been released came mere minutes later.

Asked about this, Ekanayake said he had received the documents pertaining to Silva’s pardon later, after the 93 prisoners had already been released.
Silva, along with two others, was sentenced to death over the murder of former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra in 2011. His release from prison had been long speculated, though no such move had been initiated since the change of government in 2019, until now. (Colombo/June24/2021)
