COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Saliya Wickramasuriya, a former official in Sri Lanka’s reconstruction agency, remanded for alleged fraud, was released on bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
Wickramasuriya, former Chief Operating Officer of the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA), was arrested on May 9 over alleged fraud in use of tsunami rebuilding funds.
The RADA was in charge of reconstruction projects after the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which hit Sri Lanka’s eastern and southern coasts.
Wickramasuriya’s counsel had earlier pleaded for bail, saying he required medical treatment.
Wickramasuriya was serving as the Director General of Petroleum Resource Development Secretariat at the time he was remanded.
The prosecution has told court they intend arresting parliamentarian Tiran Alles, former chairman of RADA, in connection with the investigations into the alleged fraud if they uncover enough evidence.
Police have arrested former RADA Finance and Administration Director Jayantha Samarasinghe over the alleged fraud and remanded him until July 08.
