Fresh milk sachets for 600,000 school kids from today
Fresh milk sachets will be provided to some 600,000 selected primary school students islandwide starting today (23 July) as part of a new state initiative titled ‘Kiren Sapiri Deyak’.
President Maithripala Sirisena will ceremonially hand over the first batch of sachets to a group of students at Kajugaswatte Shasthrodaya Vidyalaya in Nivitigala, Ratnapura, today, marking the inauguration of the campaign.
“This programme will address the nutritional needs of students, an issue prevalent in the area,” a statement from the President’ Media Division (PMD) quoted Shasthrodaya Vidyalaya Principal Waruna Kumara as saying.
The programme also intends to boost local milk production by providing incentives to dairy farmers, the PMD added in its statement.
The school milk program is to be augmented by the Grama Shakthi village empowerment programme and proposes to provide 15,000 cattle to 7,500 villagers to ensure continuous milk supply. Private sector companies that will produce the sachets will enter into buy-back agreements with the Grama Shakthi village units for this purpose, the PMD said.
