Future of Sri Lanka government, elections to be decided this week: Speaker
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s parliamentary speaker said a party leaders meeting will be called this week to decide on the government and general election, after discussions between the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader.
A decision on the transition of power and a date for elections will be decided after talks between the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and party leaders, the speaker of Sri Lanka’s parliament said.
He said there were three options. The first is for things to happen according to the constitution and parliament to be dissolved on March 01.
The second option was for the members of parliament to support a resolution with two thirds majority, and go for an immediate election.
The third is for the Prime Minister and the government to step down and allow a caretaker cabinet to be appointed till the general elections.
A party leaders meeting will be called this week to make a final decision this week.
