GMOA leads protest in Kurunegala against Dr. Shafi
The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) today led a protest in front of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital against alleged attempts by the Government to release Dr. Mohamed Shafi who is currently in CID custody over an assets complaint.
Dr. Shafi was arrested by the Kurunegala police on 25 May based on information received by the police regarding the alleged suspicious nature of the sources of his wealth.
GMOA member Dr. Naveen De Zoysa told RepublicNext that the protest was organised together with the hospital staff, religious leaders and residents of the Kurunegala area.
However, Dr. De Zoysa refused to comment on the GMOA’s position on the allegations of forced sterlisation made against Dr. Shafi as investigations are still underway.
It has also been reported that Dr. Shafi is not a qualified specialist in gynaecology and, therefore, obstetrics and a consultant must be present if he is to perform a caesarian operation.
Dr. Zoysa confirmed the fact that the Kurunegala doctor was not a specialist but was unable to confirm weather a consultant doctor was present at all his operations.
“Everything cannot be revealed to the media. The ongoing investigations will shed more light,” he said.
