Gotabaya assumes office as President
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa moved into the Presidential Secretariat as he formally took office as the seventh President of Sri Lanka this morning Nov 19.
A full Armed Forces Guard of Honor and a 21 Gun Salute greeted the President as he came to the Secretariat.
Dressed in a short-sleeved tunic and Black pants, President Rajapaksa was welcomed by outgoing President Maithripala Sirisena who offered him a sheaf of Betel.
After the chanting of Pirith the President signed the papers taking office.
Rajapaksa made some important appointments today. He appointed the former Secretary to the Treasury P B Jayasundara as Secretary to the President and his former Deputy S R Attygalle as Treasury Secretary.
Rajapaksa fulfilled a pre-election promise and appointed retired Major General Kamal Guneratne as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence. IT entrepreneur Oshada Senanayake was appointed Chairman of the Telecommunications Authority.
