ECONOMYNEXT – Former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa from Sri Lanka Podujana Party has taken an early lead in presidential polls in official results declared so far.
With about 10 percent of 208 polling divisions declared, Rajapaksa had polled around 55 percent, ahead of Sajith Premadasa of the National Democratic Front who had polled below 40 percent.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake from a coalition led by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was a distant third with about 4 percent of the vote.
In so-called postal votes of state workers in election duty, Rajapaksa polled around 65 percent and in several polling divisions declared in the South.
Premadasa polled more with large majorities in several polling division in the North. (Colombo/Nov17/2019)
