Government says it made Ranjan’s tapes fade away
ECONOMYNEXT – Co-Government Spokesman Mahindananda Aluthgamage says he is happy that MP Ranjan Ramanayake’s taped phone calls were no longer appearing on Social Media adding it was not because of the Coronavirus scare.
The State Minister told reporters in Colombo this morning that government had set up a special unit in the CID to investigate the tapes after the Mahanayake Theros and a large number of people had asked the government to stop the tapes from appearing.
He said that a separate unit was established within the CID comprising 25 police officers to investigate how these audiotapes were being released through social media.
The recordings of telephone conversations Ramanayake had with a number of people were released over the past weeks creating waves that titillated and horrified the public.
His conversations with senior Police officers and judges made some question whether the country’s system of Law and Order could survive this onslaught.
However, after Ramanayake spoke in Parliament on January 21st and implied he had in his possession more tapes that implicated a number of powerful figures, the release of the tapes ceased. (Colombo/Jan29/2020-SB)
