Govt contradicting itself on MCC compact – JVP
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) accused the new government today of contradicting its own pronouncements on the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact.
JVP MP Vijitha Herath told reporters this morning that the opinion the Government now holds regarding the agreement is completely contrary to its spokespersons’ pronouncements in the run-up to the recently concluded presidential election polls.
“In a special Cabinet meeting held last week, the Government decided to appoint a subcommittee to review the MCC agreement and submit a report. This raises a question as to whether they had previously promised to throw away the draft agreement without even studying it,” said Herath.
“In just under a month, the Government’s contradictory stance on this has been exposed. In their election campaign, they said the agreement was a threat to the national security, the economy and the sovereignty of the country. So why is there need now to review such an agreement? Isn’t it contradictory?” Herath said.
The MP further said that the Government used the MCC agreement during the election campaign to create fear among the public and secure votes.
“You clearly saw how those who spoke vehemently against the agreement on the campaign trail later said that 70 per cent of the MCC is actually beneficial. We need to know on what grounds they say that 70 per cent of the agreement is beneficial. This is an attempt to deceive the people. They highlighted this to secure votes, but now the Government is clearly trying to obtain the MCC funds,” he added.
