Govt. doctors in Kalutara district on token strike
Government doctors in the Kalutara district launched a token strike from 12.00 pm today, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) said.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told RepublicNext that it launched a ‘people’s no-confidence motion’ campaign against Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne at the Kalutara District General Hospital this morning, where a group of people whom he called supporters of the Minister had disrupted their campaign.
The group had allegedly tried to attack the campaigners in the presence of the Police and, according to Dr. Aluthge, the GMOA launched the strike to protest against the group and to condemn the behavior of the police in this regard.
“The strike is in effect in the Kalutara General Hospital, the Panadura Base Hospital, the Horana Base Hospital and 50 other Divisional Health Centres. A 1,000 doctors are engaged in the strike thus far,” Aluthge said.
Aluthge further said that the GMOA has not yet decided as to whether the strike will end at 8.00 am tomorrow (25) or if it will be carried out island-wide.
