Harin says Cardinal Ranjith “played politics” during the presidential elections
ECONOMYNEXT- Samagi Jana Balavegaya candidate Harin Fernando is accusing Malcolm Cardinal Ranjit of “playing politics” during last year’s presidential poll.
The former Minister told an election rally in Polonnaruwa that the Cardinal’s partisan actions caused the five per cent Catholic vote went to Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
He said he believed that if the Catholic vote had gone to Sajith Premadasa, “there would have been a tie and Sajith would have won on the second count.”
Fernando who is contesting the General Elections as a national list candidate asked who was responsible for swinging the votes other than the Cardinal.
“They (the Podujana Peramuna) targeted the Catholic vote through the Easter attacks,” he charged.
He pointed to a comment made by the Cardinal had made saying that “the Minister-son was saved but out people died,” which referred to him. This he said was a political statement.
He said that his now-famous statement that his father knew about the warnings about the attack to show that if his father knew, how come the Commander in Chief President Maithripala Sirisena did not know about it.
He referred to the recent BBC Sinhala interview with the former President Sirisena where he denied to take responsibility for the Easter attacks as he did not know about the attack beforehand.
“I was taken to the CID eight times, why, I did not kill anyone, was I the one who made the bomb,” he said.
Fernando said that he can clearly say that the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe did not know anything about the Easter attacks as he was left out of Security Council meetings because of the issues between him and Sirisena.
