Highest Paddy harvest in history – PM
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is claiming that this year’s Maha Paddy harvest is the highest ever on record which is close to three million metric tons.
Speaking at the traditional Aluth Sahal Mangalya where for centuries Sri Lankans have offered the first fruits of the rice harvest up to the Sri Maha Bodhi, Wickremesinghe said that this is because the government has invested heavily in the Agricultural sector.
Last year the Maha harvest yielded nearly 2.4 million metric tons of paddy.
The ancient ritual was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and presided over by the Ven Dr Pallegama Dhammarakkhita Sirinivasa Chief prelate of the Atamasthana,
Speaking further the Prime Minister said that his government was being criticized for imposing taxes and reminded the audience that there were taxes on various items even during King Parakramabahu’s reign.
A number of political leaders as well as thousands of devotees attended the event.
