Hour-long power outages in Sri Lanka until Wednesday (08): CEB

ECONOMYNEXT – Daily one-hour electricity disruptions will continue till Wednesday (08) in parts of Sri Lanka between 5.30pm and 9.30pm, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said.

“We have been informed that power cuts will happen till tomorrow. However it will only happen if it is necessary,” a CEB official told EconomyNext on Tuesday (07).

“We have divided our feeders into four main blocks, and if we are going for a power cut it will be between 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm.”

Feeders are the power lines through which electricity is transmitted in power systems. Feeder transmits power from a generating station or substation to the distribution points.

“There will be no island wide power cuts,” the official said.

No instructions have been received regarding any extended power cuts yet, he added.

Sri Lanka was hit by a cascading power failure shortly after 1130hours on Friday, with the grid down around the island.

The blackout was suspected to have been triggered by the failure of a 220kV transmission line that brings power from the Mahaweli hydro-generation system running from Kotmale to Biyagama in the capital Colombo.

Government ministers have also implied sabotage by trade unions engaged in a work to rule campaign against a power deal with US company. (Colombo/Dec07/2021)
