I am committed to a political solution to the National issue – Ranil

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the country is close to reaching a political solution to the National issue that caused the 30-year war.

Addressing the prize-giving ceremony of Skandarvodaya College in Jaffna yesterday July 15, the Premier said that England cricket team was a good example of national integration.

“Many members are immigrants and have not spent more than five or six years in England. But they have become Englishmen and came together to win the World Cup,” he pointed out.

He lamented that after living together for thousands of years the people of Sri Lanka cannot call themselves Sri Lankans.

Commenting further, Wickremesinghe said that his government was very close to a political solution and within a few years could reach that goal.

He said that he and his party is committed to a political solution to the national problem and ensured that he and his party will stand for devolution.

“We will discuss and implement a devolution package which is acceptable to the Sinhalese, Muslims and others. In the next two years, we will finalise how devolution works. Then we can proudly say we are Sri Lankans and we are integrated,” Wickremesinghe added.

He said there are many unresolved issues from the war. “Primarily there is concern about War Widows and we are working on that,” he said.
