I’m the only President who didn’t meddle with the judiciary – Sirisena
President Maithripala Sirisena claimed yesterday that he is the only President in the history of the country to have not been accused of interfering with the judiciary.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a new court complex in Polonnaruwa, Sirisena said no matter how harshly he is criticised by sections of society, he has ensured democracy, freedom and the independence of the judiciary.
Since 1978, he said, all executive presidents were accused of putting pressure on the judiciary, but in his tenure as President, he has not made one wrong decision in that regard.
During the last five years, he went on to say, an environment was created where judges from the Supreme Court downward can carry out their duties independently and impartially without having to endure telephone calls from the powers that be.
“In order to create a decent and disciplined society, it is our responsibility to create an environment where everyone can live without fear or suspicion,” President Sirisena said.
