Immigration Department transferred to Sri Lanka’s Mahaweli Ministry
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration has been transferred to the Ministry of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development, from the Ministry of Defence according to a gazette notice published by the government.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has assigned the Mahaweli Ministry to oversee “Matters relating to Immigration and Emigration and Matters relating to Sri Lankan Citizenship,” the notice said.
The Immigration Department was earlier under the Ministry of Defence.
The Mahaweli Ministry is headed by President Rajapaksa’s brother Chamal.
The laws Immigrants and Emigrants Act, No. 20 of 1948, Citizenship Act, No. 18 of 1948, Grant of Citizenship to Persons of Indian Origin Act, No. 35 of 2003, Grant Citizenship to Stateless Persons Act, No. 5 of 1986, Grant of Citizenship to Stateless Persons (Special Provisions) Act, No. 39 of 1988 will be under the Mahaweli ministry.
