India calls Sri Lanka to uphold democracy, constitution
ECONOMYNEXT – India has called on Sri Lanka to uphold democracy and the constitution as the island descends deeper into a constitutional crisis.
"India is closely following the recent political developments in Sri Lanka," Ministry of external affairs spokesman Raveesh Kumar has said.
"India is closely following the recent political developments in Sri Lanka. As a democracy and a close friendly neighbor, we hope that democratic values and the constitutional process will be respected."
Sri Lanka was plunged into a constitutional crisis Friday, after President Maithripala Sirisena appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister with incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe insisting that he is still in office.
The US and the EU has also expressed concern over developments in Sri Lanka and has urged the constitution to be respected. (Colombo/Oct29/2018)
