India sends two ships, airlifts flood relief to Sri Lanka
ECONOMYNEXT – India has sent two ships and airlifted over 80 tonnes of relief supplies to Sri Lanka’s flood victims, the country’s embassy in Colombo said in a statement.
"Sri Lanka occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of Indians, and India’s emergency relief assistance is a manifestation of our abiding friendship," the statement said.
"India will continue to work closely with the Government of Sri Lanka to address longer-term rehabilitation needs of the affected people as part of its development partnership with Sri Lanka."
An Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft brought in 50 tonnes of relief material including 700 tents, 10 electric generators, emergency lamps, medication for 10,000 people, torches, raincoats, umbrellas, folding mattresses, water filters and water purification equipment.
The equipment have been identified as priority items by authorities in Sri Lanka.
