Inreased Hajj quota for Sri Lankan Muslims
MP Faizer Mustapha commended yesterday (29) the new Hajj Committee appointed by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for securing an increased Hajj quota for Sri Lankan Muslims.
During a visit to Saudi Arabia, the Hajj Committee led by Marjan Azmi, a government official overseeing Islamic affairs, had signed an agreement with Umrah Deputy Minister Dr Abdul Sulaiman Mashat to increase Sri Lanka’s Hajj quota.
According to the new agreement, a total of 3,500 Sri Lankan Hajj pilgrims will receive the quota, a benefit offered to only 2,850 Sri Lankan Muslims before.
Sri Lankan Ambassador in Riyadh Mohammed Azmi and Consul General A W A Salam also participated in bilateral discussions held in Medina and Mecca, a press release said.
