Jail term for Sri Lankan housemaid previously sentenced to death
ECONOMYNEXT – A Sri Lankan housemaid sentenced to death by stoning for adultery in Saudi Arabia has had her sentence reduced to a jail term after appeals, the country’s deputy foreign minister Harsha de Silva said.
The domestic worker sentenced to death by stoning after she admitted committing adultery while working in the Arab nation.
The Sri Lankan government’s appeal for clemency was taken up Wednesday and was successful, with the death sentence reduced to a jail term, the ministries of foreign affairs and foreign employment said in a joint statement.
The government provided legal aid to the domestic worker through the Sri Lankan mission in Saudi Arabia, it said. (Colombo/December 23, 2015)
