Journalist attacked over book on corruption in previous govt
Freelance journalist and writer Lasantha Wjierathne was allegedly attacked by a group of unidentified people this morning (14 Nov) in Habaraduwa, Galle, over a book written by him about alleged fraud and corruption in the previous government.
According to Police Media Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara, the journalist was admitted to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital following the attack.
Police said that a group of three people had entered his house around 2.45 a.m. today and threatened him and his wife using firearms while damaging the property.
Wijerathna, however, told reporters that a group of four had forced him to switch off the CCTV cameras in his home at gunpoint when he stepped outside the house to investigate a noise he’d heard.
He claimed the group had questioned him about the book he had written titled ‘Wasteful Development and Corruption’ which relates to alleged fraud and corruption in the previous government.
The assailants had also questioned him about his Facebook account and demanded whether he had any other work beside writing such books.
Wijerathne told reporters that his hand got stabbed while trying to stop an attack from a knife from one of the assailants.
Police have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators.
