Kirielle among four being considered for UNP candidacy
Four names have been proposed by the United National Party (UNP) for candidacy in the upcoming presidential election including that of Kandy district MP Lakshman Kiriella, UNP MP Chandima Gamage told reporters at Temple Trees today (29).
So far, Kiriella’s name has not been mentioned in connection with the presidential poll next to frontrunners Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and Minister Sajith Premadasa.
Gamage said that about 90 per cent of the parties who did not join the opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) will join hands with the UNP for the presidential election.
“Not only political parties, but also civil society organisations will join us,” he said.
Just like they did in 2015, said Gamage, the UNP will announce its candidate depending on the candidate put forward by the Opposition.
Meanwhile, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will contest separately at the Parliamentary elections scheduled for next year but will join the UNP to form a government following the elections, he said.
“They will, however, support us in the presidential election,” he added.
Responding to a question raised by a journalist, Gamage said that he can confirm two Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) parliament members representing the Anuradhapura district are hoping to join the UNP alliance.
The MP also said that job appointment letters will be given to 16,800 degree-holders at Temple Trees tomorrow (30) under the patronage of the Prime Minister.
