President Maithripala Sirisena is asking the government to devise a land policy that favors the poor and landless.
At a meeting in Colombo attended by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several Ministers, yesterday (20) the President said that racketeers should not be allowed to exploit the land.
The meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (20) was convened to discuss amendments to Land Act
President Sirisena also stressed that the main objective of the amendment should be to give ownership of the land to the poor people in the country who are suffering.
The President also briefed the relevant parties on the corruption that has occurred due to the transfer of land powers to the local authorities.
In addition to the Prime Minister Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, P. Harrison, Gayantha Karunatilake, Daya Gamage, MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and other government officials were also present at the discussion.
