Leadership struggle of Sri Lanka’s UNP put off till next week

ECONOMYNEXT – The struggle to select a leader for the United National Party was put off for next week but here was strong support for a vote to decide the leader, legislator Harsha de Silva has said following a group meeting.

@RW_UNP proposed a leadership council @sajithpremadasa proposed a vote for one leader,” de Silva said in a twitter.com message.

“I took minutes of t 33 MPs who spoke; majority for a vote. Finally democracy!”

Ranil Wickremesinghe who had changed the party’s constitution to make it difficult to oust him, had been resisting attempts to remove him.

Ahead of the meeting there were proposals to keep him as the leader and make Sajith Premadasa the leader of a broader alliance, party sources said.
