Low student turnout continues today
Schools started their second term for secondary classes (grades 6-13) yesterday (06) amid high security, with low student turnout. The trend continued today, with student attendance remaining low, and some schools had a student turnout even lower than yesterday.
The Education Ministry admitted in a statement yesterday that the student attendance was ‘relatively lower’ than usual in schools across the island.
Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the situation will improve and school operations will get back to normal soon.
Thirty seven students were present at Visakha Vidaylalaya yesterday, while 43 students attended school today.
Three hundred and nine students attended Royal College yesterday while 366 students were present today.
Meanwhile, 50 students were present at Nalanda College yesterday, whereas it decreased to 43 students today.
Minister Kariyawasam thanked all parents who sent their children to schools and thanked the principals and teachers who helped to make the effort a success.
