Mahanayakes to meet Muslim politicians

A conference of the country’s leading Buddhist prelates is saying it will invite the Muslim politicians who resigned from office for a discussion shortly.

At the conclusion of their half day deliberations yesterday the prelates said they want to send out a message of unity.

The meeting resumed this morning presided over by the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siam Sect Ven. Warakagoda Gnanaratana Thero.

A formal statement that will cover 15 points of discussion concerning the situation in the country will be issued this evening.

Yesterday a short statement was released calling on the Muslim politicians who resigned to revisit their decision to resign from their positions.

“We think that the resignation of all Muslim ministers from the current government is something that should not have happened,” they said.

It added that they are requesting the “ministers to take up their positions again and rejoin the government.”

“Also if there is a VIP, a minister or a deputy minister who has allegations leveled against him, we would like to kindly request them to come forward and prove your innocence to the government, the security forces and all other relevant factions,” it added.

“During the discussions, we stressed that we do not have any hatred against the Muslim community, they live together with us.”
