Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena likely to be Speaker of the Ninth Parliament
ECONOMYNEXT – The new Speaker of Parliament will likely be veteran parliamentarian Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, the Parliament Spokesman told EconomyNext.
Abeywardena who first entered Parliament in 1983 has been the Chief Minister for the Southern Province, a Deputy Minister and a Cabinet Minister.’
He was first elected as a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and this year was elected as an MP for the Matara District from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
The Deputy Speaker’s Position, also known as the Chairman of Committees will most likely go to the junior partner in the governing alliance the SLFP and the candidate will be Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, also a former Cabinet Minister.
The Leader of the Opposition position will most probably to go to Sajith Premadasa leader of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya the largest Opposition grouping.
The Ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka will convene tomorrow morning and elect the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Leader of the Opposition and hold the swearing-in of the Members.
Two of the MPs will be transported from Jail as one of them, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan aka “Pillayan” is in Remand prison for the alleged murder of another MP and the other is Premalal Jayasekara aka “Choka Malli” who is on Death Row for the murder of a UNP supporter in 2015.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will address Parliament in the afternoon and present his government’s program for the future.
