COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – The Maldivian Sun Siyam hotel group is building Sri Lanka’s first over-water villas in Kalpitiya, on the north-west coast, its owner told an Indian Ocean hospitality forum in Colombo.
Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, Chairman and Managing Director, Sun Hotels & Resorts, said the resort was part of the overseas expansion of the “home-grown” Maldivian hotel brand.
The 68-room Sun Siyam Kalpitiya on Vellai island, slated for opening in 2017, is the Maldivian hotel firm’s second investment in Sri Lanka.
It already operates the Sun Aqua Passikudah on the east coast, which Mohamed said was the first overseas venture by a fully Maldivian owned brand.
The two-day Hospitality Investment Conference Indian Ocean 2015 organised by Sphere Conferences, the conference arm of Singapore Press Holdings Limited, covered the Indian Ocean islands of Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles and Sri Lanka.
