Malik gets top job in Sri Lanka cabinet expansion

ECONOMYNEXT – Ruling United National Party (UNP) Chairman Malik Samarawickrama is to be sworn in as minister of International Trade and Investment when the cabinet is expanded this week along with new deputy ministers, party sources said.

Samarawickrama, a key figure in the new administration, is set to be a key policy driver of the new administration and placed in charge of strategic investment projects.

"Large scale projects will come under this ministry while it will also be entrusted with negotiating trade agreements with other countries," a UNP source said.

With Samarawickrema, four others could also be sworn in on Wednesday along with 45 deputy ministers.

Under the so called "national government," the EPDP (Eelam People’s Democratic Party) could have its sole MP Douglas Devananda getting a portfolio. The Ceylon Workers’ Congress whioch secured only two seats contesting under the UPFA is also tipped to get a cabinet post. (Colombo/Sept07/2015)
