Mangala calls for report on import of waste
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera is calling for a full investigation into the alleged import of scrap and used products into the country.
In a press release issued Wednesday, July 24 evening, the Minister stated that these items cannot be imported without the express permission of the Central Environment Authority.
The statement added that the Director-General of Customs P S M Charles has been asked to investigate and report to the Minister.
The Minister has promised stern action against any parties found to have committed wrongdoing.
Some of the items brought into the country reportedly contain human remains and this is also being investigated.
