Mangala resigns from Finance Ministry
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera resigned from the post of Finance Minister today after the election of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President of Sri Lanka.
The Minister in a letter addressed to President Maithripala Sirisena, Samaraweera said that he considers yesterday’s election as the freest and fairest election held in recent times.
“The verdict given by the people is clear and thereby I wish to tender my resignation as Finance Minister as of Nov 17,” he said.
Samaraweera was among a group of senior party-men and Ministers who led a revolt against the United National Party Leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to nominate fellow cabinet member Sajith Premadasa for the candidacy.
Premadasa lost to Rajapaksa by more than 10 percentage points.
