Many Sri Lanka expats in Lebanon who asked to return stays on
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s embassy in Lebanon said that 860 out of 1384 stranded Sri Lankans who had registered for an evacuation list have not returned to the island citing numerous reasons.
A group 175 stranded Sri Lankans including four children were repatriated on a Sri Lankan Airlines charter flight UL 554.
Another 348 have got tickets on Qatar Airways and have requested landing permission, the embassy said.
A total of 1384 stranded Sri Lankans registered to be returned to the country.
But 860 persons have however refused to leave citing numerous reasons, the embassy said.
The embassy did not specify the reasons given for not returning. Lebanon is in a severe economic crisis after its central bank printed money and the currency has collapsed.
The country is getting rapidly dollarized.
Air ticket prices have gone up sharply after Coronavirus as airlines carry fewer passengers and also run return journeys mostly empty. Airlines are taking cargo to cover costs and freight rates have also gone up. (Colombo/Apr06/2021)
