Massive earthquake off Honduras, possible tsunami: US authorities
ECONOMYNEXT – The US geological survey has reported a magnitude 7.8 massive earthquake off the cost of Honduras, which can generate tsunami waves.
The quake occurred at 0253 UTC (about 8.52 am Sri Lanka time), the USGS said. Based on past data tsunami waves are possible for some Caribbean islands, US authorities have warned.
A tsunami adviory had been issued for the Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands.
"Based on all availale data, there is a tsunami threat to Puerto Ric and the Virgin Islands of sea level fluctuations and strong ocean curents that could be a hazard alon the coasts, beaches, in harbours and in coastal water," the advisory said.
Waves up to a meter are possibl on several Caribbean islands.
Evaluation of the quake is in progress.
