Ministerial portfolios not a privilege but a responsibility – President
The Ministerial portfolios and other positions bestowed on government MPs must not be considered a privilege but a responsibility assigned by the people, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of State Ministers and Deputy Ministers of the interim government today, the President said that the State Minister portfolios were created after considering the needs of the people.
“We have to understand that what we received today are not privileges but important responsibilities. One might have doubts about the ministerial post they received. However, regardless of the title, one must understand that there are many responsibilities to fulfil. The Sate Ministerial posts were specially created after considering the needs of the people which I observed for many years and during the election campaign,” said Rajapaksa.
The President also stressed that the public sector has to be further strengthened by encouraging efficient, hard-working state employees.
“We have a tremendous challenge. There are efficient officers in the public sector. I request all State Ministers, Deputy Ministers and other MPs to encourage those officers and strengthen the public sector to serve the people. This is a special responsibility given to us by the people and we have to work hard in order to fulfil that responsibility,” he said.
