ECONOMYNEXT – The Ministry of Transport has deployed more buses and trains for Sri Lankans visiting their hometowns for the upcoming Sinhala & Tamil New Year holidays, the ministry said.
The government has doubled the number of buses it deployed last year, the ministry said in a statement, with additional trains also deployed, from today (09) to April 16, in addition to the normal schedule.
Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge was quoted as saying 1,192 Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses and 1,800 private buses have been deployed in this regard, while 21 trains have also been added, running 58 additional train trips.
Relevant authorities including chairmen and officials dealing with the SLTB, trains and private buses will be regulating the programme from the Pettah Central Bus Stand, the statement further said.
The ministry advises the public to be cautious of the pandemic and follow COVID-19 guidelines when using public transport in order to prevent an outbreak, it added.(Colombo/Apr09/2021)
