Navy seizes another haul of beedi leaves
The Navy has seized 50 kilogrammes of beedi leaves in search operations carried out in the Kachchativu Island off Jaffna and elsewhere in the Northern seas yesterday (31 July).
During a foot patrol carried out in the southern part of the Kachchativu Island, Navy personnel found a parcel containing 30kg of beedi leaves washed ashore, the Navy said. In another patrol carried out in the seas off the Delft Island, an unpacked parcel floating in the waters containing 20kg of beedi leaves was been found.
The seized consignment of beedi leaves is due to be handed over to Jaffna Customs for legal action.
The Navy believes that the smugglers might have left behind the consignment of beedi leaves as a result of ongoing naval operations.
