NCPA nabs youth charged with impregnating 15-year-old
ECONOMYNEXT – The special police unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has arrested a 22- year-old who had fled after allegedly impregnating a 15-year-old girl in Chilaw.
According to a media release issued by the police, the suspect had started a relationship with the girl in June last year after a chance encounter on a bus to Kandy. The girl had been on her way to her uncle’s residence in Kandy following an argument with her parents, police said.
A month later, the suspect had taken the young girl to Delogda, Gampaha, where the couple had purportedly cohabited for a few days. The suspect had then allegedly abandoned the girl at the Pettah bus stand in Colombo.
The girl, who was by then pregnant, had given birth upon admission to a hospital. The doctor who examined her had filed a complaint with the NCPA, police said.
According to the police media release, the girl “did not know anything” about the suspect, prompting the investigators to trace him using a phone number he had contacted her on.
The suspect was tracked down to a shop opposite the Muneshwaram Kovil in Chilaw.
The suspect was presented before the magistrate courts and then remanded, police said. (Colombo/Aug26/2020)
