National Organizer of Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe is alleging that the government’s sudden decision to declare Saindamaruthu as a new municipality is an attempt to appease a particular community.
He told reporters at the Opposition Leader’s office this morning, that Minister of Public Administration Janaka Bandara Tennakoon should explain the rationale behind the government’s decision to establish such a local authority.
“For many years naming Saindamaruthu as a municipality has been a controversial problem. On 11 November 2019, Basil Rajapksa visited Saindamarudu and promised a new municipality. Therefore, a question arises as to what the agreement they came into in this regard,” Warnasinghe said.
“We would like to ask Janaka Bandara Thennakoon what the rationale is for the government to create a new municipality. If it was done on a scientific basis he should explain that” he went on.
Warnasinghe further pointed out that creating administrative divisions on the basis race and religion might lead to ethnic divisions.
“You know that Saindamarudu is an area where there is 100 per cent Muslim population and a Tamil majority live in the Divisional Secretariat near that area,”
Tamil people objected to this decision but the government did not even consult them. This will lead to a clear ethnic conflict,” Warnasinghe warned.
