New salary policy on the cards for teachers and principals
ECONOMYNEXT – The cabinet has approved a proposal to resolve salary anomalies in the school teaching service, with a new salary policy to be introduced in the next government’s first budget.
The new salary policy will incorporate recommendations by the National Salary Commission appointed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to look into salary anomalies faced by school teachers and principals, co-cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
The minister said the decision was not influenced by the recent strike action launched by teachers but based on a plan to combine all educational services.
The salary anomalies will have to be resolved in the coming budget, Gunawardena said, as there is no capacity to pay interim allowances or any other allowances due to a limitation on the vote on accounts.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and his camp have bound the government by not giving parliamentary approval to the amendments on the vote on account, he added. (Colombo/Feb28/2020)
