ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is to buy a deep sea sand dredger to meet growing demand from the construction industry for offshore raw material as existing sources of river sand dwindle, a government statement said.
“Due to the scarcity of river sand utilized for constructions, there is a higher demand for offshore sand as an alternative,” it said.
This demand is now met by the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation which prepares and supplies offshore sand to be used for construction activities.
But this satisfies only about 10 percent of the total sand requirement in the construction industry, the statement said.
The government intends buying a dredger to supply sand from deep sea areas to meet the anticipated increase in demand for sea sand for construction.
The Cabinet of ministers this week approved a proposal by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development to buy a dredger for excavating sand in the deep sea, the statement said.
